All
candidates for the F-M Ambulance/ North Dakota State College of Science Paramedic
Program must possess essential skills and abilities necessary to
complete the school curriculum successfully, either with or without
reasonable accommodations for any disabilities the individual may have.
The F- M Ambulance Paramedic Program Technical Standards are as follows:
The student must have the ability to:

Record historical and
on-going information;
-
Detect, understand, and
interpret physical findings;
-
Communicate, verbally and
in writing, physical
findings, develop and record diagnoses as well as treatment plans;
-
Manipulate equipment and
instruments commonly used by paramedics and paramedics-in-training;
-
Recognize, understand, and
interpret instructional materials required during medical education;
-
Detect and appreciate
alterations in anatomy and /or physiology, or other abnormalities
encountered as part of the general physical examination;
-
Visually recognize,
interpret and evaluate diagnostic studies;
-
Review and interpret notes
prepared by other members of the health care team;
-
Perform calculations
necessary to deliver appropriate care to the patient;
-
Be exposed to various
hazardous situations to include: cold/heat extremes, traffic, high
speed vehicle operation, bio-hazardous wastes, and violent patient
behaviors;
-
Lift equipment and
patients in excess of 50 pounds during the course of clinicals
and/or lab situations;
-
Communicate effectively
with patients, families and other healthcare personnel; and
-
Perform all of the above
skills within a timeframe that is appropriate for a clinical
setting.
All applicants accepted to the F-M Ambulance/NDSCS Paramedic Program
must be able to meet the Program’s technical standards. The
purpose of the Program is to graduate students who will become
entry-level competent paramedics. As a limited enrollment program,
applicants who, due to a disability, will not be able to complete the
physical or written portions of the NREMT examination may not be
admitted to the Program.
The
F-M Ambulance Paramedic Program is prepared to provide reasonable
accommodations to students who are accepted by the Program and who have
physical and learning disabilities (e.g.: mobility impairments; chronic
illnesses, dyslexia and other learning disabilities). The Program
will review the information in order to determine whether a reasonable
accommodation can be made. The Program reserves the right to
reject any requests for accommodation that, in its judgment would
involve the use of an intermediary that would in effect require a
student to rely on someone else’s power of selection and observation,
fundamentally alter the nature of the Program’s educational program,
lower academic standards, cause an undue hardship on the Program or
endanger the safety of patients or others.
